Go Velo has been working with all 200 year 8 pupils at St Christopher’s, Accrington, providing Level 3 cycle training and route planning.
We recognised that the infrastructure surrounding the school would allow for a mostly traffic-free journey to and from it.
When planning our training, we designed routes from the school’s main catchment areas. This meant we could give pupils the option of either Level 3 training or a traffic-free route to get to school.
We designed attractive traffic-free route cards to hand out, and held a route-planning session, where riders could decide on the most suitable route for them.
Boosting Confidence and Inclusivity
Â
“The flexibility with planning and organising the event, meant it was accessible to every pupil, and the instructors catered for all abilities of students, in a caring environment.”
We put on extra cycle training sessions for any pupils lacking in confidence, including Learn to Ride training for pupils riding a bike for the first time.
We brought along helmets and bikes, to ensure everyone would have access to riding, and we got hold of a trike for one rider who was struggling with balancing.
Building a Safe Cycling Legacy
Go Velo is now working with the local authority with the aim of adding permanent rule markings from each catchment area to make traffic-free route to school as clear as possible.
The pupils could take away the route maps we’d prepared, to encourage them to keep cycling to school.

“Thank you Go Velo for providing us with such an excellent service in delivering Bikeability and map reading to our year 8 secondary school students.”
